Fly Fishing for All

THighland trouthe Association can provide fishing to suit all tastes with its wide selection of waters.

Family fishing
Lochs Laoigh and Loch Lannsaidh are close to the Town, and are both stocked in addition to the natural supply - Lannsaidh with rainbows and Laoigh with brown trout. Both lochs have car access (not tarmac) close to the lochside and have boathouses suitable for picnic lunches, etc. Bank fishing is also permitted.

Salmon and Sea Trout fishing
This is available on Loch Brora (boat fishing only) approximately 40 minutes drive from Dornoch. Brora opens on the 1st April, with the early part of the season giving the better chance for a salmon - July onwards being the better time for sea-trout. Estuary bank fishing with fly or spinner is also available at Loch Fleet around the full tides.

Accessible Wild Brown Trout fishing
Loch Buidhe and Loch Lagain are approximately half an hour’s drive from Dornoch and cars can be taken to the lochside, the boats being within a short walking distance. Good quality brown trout are available on Loch Buidhe with smaller fish on Loch Lagain, both lochs enjoying fine scenery and good sport. Bank fishing can be as productive, should it be too windy for the boat.

For the more adventurous angler
Loch Laro and Lochs Cracail Mor and Beag require from half to three quarters of an hour walk from the car, but offer splendid fishing for brownies. Those willing to make the effort are rewarded with a fine level walk in isolated grandeur.

Permits
All permits are available from Dornoch Outdoor, Castle Street - tel 01862 811111 - as are packets of trout flies and rainbow lures, and a full range of fishing tackle for hire and purchase. A more detailed booklet on the Association's fishing is also available from Dornoch Outdoor. All the loch fishing is by fly only and bag limits of four fish pertain to the stocked lochs.

To help you pronounce the names of the lochs:
Loch Laoigh ('Lee'), Loch Lannsaidh ('Lounsey'), Loch Cracail ('Crackle'), Loch Buidhe ('Boo-ee'). Click here for a location map
