A large part of the Dornoch Links is "Common Good Land," including the Royal Dornoch and Struie Golf courses, the Dornoch Caravan Park and the Airstrip.
Revenue from rent of the land is administered by elected representatives, for the good of the Town. In recent years, projects have included repair of steps in the Town, the provision of improved access to the beach and a substantial donation to the former Ross House, now the Dornoch Campus of North Highland College, opened in September 2000.
The area is rich in fauna and flora and is an area of Special Scientific Interest. Among the spectacular range of summer plants, frog orchid (coeloglossum viride) and common twyblade (listera ovata) are worth searching for, despite their subtle greenish flowers. Colour is provided by great drifts of purple milk vetch (astragalus danicus), ragged robin (lychnis flos-cuculi) and kidney vetch (anthyllis vulneraria). Later in the year, grass of parnassus (parnassia palustris) and seaside centaury (centaurium littorale), a plant near to its northern limit in the UK, make their appearance.
Visitors are welcome to enjoy the links, and interpretive panels have been provided near the car cark at the airfield.
